This exclusive photo, snapped last August by amateur photographer Owen Blickensderfer, reveals at last the cause of the mysterious disappearances of local children over the past few years. "I was just walking along the Cannonball River with my camera in my hand, when I noticed some kids swimming," states Mr. Blickensderfer. "Ever since the swimming pool closed for lack of repairs, a lot of local children resorted to swimming in the river to cool off on hot days. All of a sudden this huge, ugly gray shape leaps out of the water and the next thing I know the kids aren't there any more. It startled me so much that I accidentally snapped the shutter on my camera and caught the whole thing on film with this one photo!" Mr. Blickensderfer did not have an answer when questioned as to why he has said nothing about the incident for fully half a year. I'm not surprised that it came to this," says Mott swimming pool manager, Brian Wright. "It brings tears to my eyes to think that we could have avoided all this if we had gotten started on a new swimming pool a few years earlier." Then sobbing, Mr. Wright choked out the words, "And now we know why our town's population has been declining so rapidly all these years." Mott mayor, Troy Mosbrucker, says that the appearance of a shark in the Cannonball river is a mystery. "The river isn't more than ten feet deep in the deepest part. As far as we can tell, the shark may have been purchased at one of those ridiculous little traveling circuses that come to town once in a great while. Some kid bought the baby shark and took it home. When the boy didn't take care of it like he promised, his father probably flushed it down the toilet." The unfortunate incident with the shark has precipitated at least one positive thing for the community. Work has proceeded with the renovation of the swimming pool including a new vinyl liner, deck, diving board, heating and filter system, bath house and lighting. "The town had to dig deep to make this project a reality. But if more folks who moved away from Mott would donate money to the new pool project, we could free up tax money to fund other projects," says Brian Wright. Meanwhile, a number of townsfolk are cleaning their tackle boxes and buying heavier lines for their fishing poles. Shark season is just around the corner!
