MOTT GALLERY OF HISTORY AND ART

The Mott Gallery of History and Art is dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of our area. Established in 2003, we displayed the first exhibits and artwork in the old Methodist Church of Mott. Along with help and cooperation of various museums in the area, we have benefitted from the support of the Historic Society of North Dakota and the North Dakota Council on the Arts.

Bringing performing artists to the community is also part of what the Mott Cultural Society does. Last spring they sponsored Chuck Suchy. In the fall they brought in the Dickinson Prairie Rose singers – a Sweet Adelines group – who performed at Mott’s Playhouse Theater. In February of 2005 we presented a concert by Clyde Bauman. His tenor voice has thrilled audiences, while his portrayal of Mylo Hatzenbuhler, the Farmboy Rock Star, continues to bring laughter every summer at Teddy Roosevelt National Park in Medora. Several years ago Mickey Rooney performed in the theater, and that has encouraged the society to plan more events in our community-run Playhouse Theater.

We seek paintings, drawings, wood carvings and other art media for the gallery. Call Mary Pat if you have items suitable for an art display. Plans include holding art shows by professional artists and selling some of their work. If anyone has interesting items suitable for display, they may contact Mary Pat at 701-824-2552 in the evenings or at the Mott drug store at 701-824-2897. Use these numbers to arrange for a tour of the gallery. Mary Pat is usually in the Drug Store during the day and she has a key.

The gallery board and committees are enthusiastically working to make Mott’s history and local art available to visitors and interested travelers. We welcome your ideas and donations to this project. The organization welcomes new members. The Gallery needs volunteers who are willing to unlock the door and be present when it is open to the public. The Gallery will be open during special events in town and by request. Admission will be a free-will donation. Operating funds are tight at this time and tax-deductible donations of any amount can be left at the Mott City Hall or sent to Mary Messer, treasurer. Mary’s address is box 307, Mott ND, 58646.

A comprehensive history of Mott compiled by Heather Hertz is available for fifteen dollars at the Gallery or at the Mott drug store. Book sales directly support the Gallery. To have a book sent in the mail call Mary Pat at the drug store at 701-824-2897. At night call Mary Pat at 701-824-2552. There is additional shipping charge to have a book sent to you.

A sense of where we came from is an important thing to pass to our children. If we understand where we came from, we can understand better who we are. The Mott Gallery of History and Art will help future generations understand their roots and heritage.
